Ukraine (from 2022) — the US assessment
In June 2022 the US began supplying HIMARS to Ukraine; officials called its GPS-guided precision strikes on Russian logistics “the equivalent of an airstrike,” with 40+ systems provided by 2024. Ukraine’s specific destruction claims are not itemized-confirmed by the US, so this page relies on the US assessment.
Afghanistan (2017) — confirmed by US forces
In 2017 US Marines deployed HIMARS to Helmand, Afghanistan, flying a dozen-plus missions supporting Afghan forces that destroyed Taliban fighters, IED facilities and drug labs.
Syria vs. ISIS (2016 & 2025–26) — confirmed by US forces
The US first fired HIMARS in Syria against ISIS in 2016; in Operation Hawkeye Strike (Dec 2025) CENTCOM explicitly used HIMARS among 100+ precision munitions against ISIS comms and logistics nodes.
The famous “35,000 rounds in five months” at Raqqa (2017) used M777 howitzers, not HIMARS, and is excluded to avoid misattribution.

- HIMARS’ core value is “shoot-and-scoot”: a launcher can fire and displace within two minutes, and its wheeled mobility lowers the odds of PLA counter-battery detection and saturation strikes.
- Taiwan’s ATACMS reach ~300 km, covering some airfields and logistics hubs along China’s southeast coast — part of what analysts call a “left-of-launch” deep-strike capability.
- In an anti-landing fight, GMLRS precision rockets can suppress beachhead assembly areas and temporary piers — the deep-strike piece of an asymmetric, porcupine strategy.
- Batched deliveries mean the capability is not fully in place until after 2027 and 2030; near-term it must work alongside existing tube and rocket artillery.
- Ukraine shows HIMARS depends heavily on timely targeting and an intelligence chain — whether Taiwan’s own ISR and command systems keep pace is just as decisive.
