Placing Taiwan in the international context of who the US sells to, and how much, shows what tier of weapon the US is willing to hand Taiwan. Each reading below cites the peer-buyer comparison data.
F-16V — the world’s largest single buyer
Taiwan is buying 66 newly built F-16 Block 70/72 jets — the largest single buyer worldwide, ahead of Turkey (40), Morocco (25), Bulgaria and Bahrain (16 each). Selling the latest F-16 and letting Taiwan be the top buyer is itself a marker of capability and trust.
Harpoon — an order no one else matches
Taiwan’s 460 Harpoon missiles (400 coastal-defense in 100 launcher sets, plus 60 air-launched) dwarf every other buyer (India 43, Egypt 20, South Korea 19, Philippines 12) — the largest single Harpoon order in years, and the core weapon for anti-invasion defense.
HIMARS — the world’s second-largest buyer
Taiwan’s 111 HIMARS launchers rank second worldwide, behind only Poland (506) and ahead of Australia (90) and Romania (54). HIMARS proved the value of mobile precision fires in Ukraine.
Javelin — second only to Poland among paying buyers
Taiwan’s ~1,810 Javelin missiles rank second among Foreign Military Sales buyers, behind Poland (2,506) and ahead of Australia (1,308); Ukraine’s 10,000+ are US military aid and counted separately.
ATACMS — a marker of the trust tier
The December 2025 HIMARS package (case 26-01) includes 420 M57 ATACMS — deep-strike missiles with roughly 300 km range. Willingness to sell a weapon that can strike deep across the strait signals a higher tier of trust in Taiwan. This reading is contextual inference and still needs a DoD/CRS-grade source before publication; it currently cites only the DSCA notice.
Delivery delays are real, but each has a verifiable official or semi-official reason. Where no official explanation was found, we honestly mark it "no official statement" rather than speculate.
