Combat Record

Every entry is sourced; cases without authoritative sources are omitted.

1991 Gulf War — claims vs. review

The Gulf War is where Patriot’s publicized success rate diverged most from later official review: 1992 GAO testimony to Congress found the Army’s claim of intercepting 70% of Scuds “not supported.”

Dhahran — a software flaw kills 28

On 25 Feb 1991 a Patriot running over 100 hours failed — due to a clock-conversion rounding error — to intercept a Scud that hit a US barracks in Dhahran, killing 28; the fix arrived the next day. It directly triggered a full US review of the system’s reliability.

2003 Iraq War — intercepts, but fratricide

In 2003 Patriot intercepted enemy ballistic missiles but also shot down a British Tornado and a US F/A-18 in fratricide, killing three aircrew; reviews cited heavy automation and poor IFF reliability (the full Defense Science Board report is classified; a public summary is cited here).

2022 UAE — confirmed by US forces

In January 2022 US CENTCOM confirmed Patriots intercepted two incoming missiles at Al Dhafra Air Base, UAE, with no US casualties — the first US combat firing of Patriot since 2003.

2023 Ukraine — first confirmed hypersonic intercept

In May 2023 Ukraine downed a Russian Kh-47 “Kinzhal” hypersonic missile with a Patriot near Kyiv; a Pentagon spokesman confirmed it on 9 May — the first confirmed intercept of a missile Russia had long called “uninterceptable.”

Saudi Arabia’s long-running high-interception claims come mainly from manufacturer PR and scattered media reports, without case-by-case official confirmation, and are not listed here as verified results.

PAC-3 User Nations

PAC-3 spans generations (CRI, MSE) with non-comparable procurement scopes, so a straight quantity ranking is misleading; below are the major user nations and their variants.
